Hugh William Barnes, born in 1948, was named for both of his grandfathers. Brinsley is his 4th and 5th great grandfather. Hugh is based in Lenoir, North Carolina and provides training in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and consulting and training in genealogy research. SEO is the art and science of getting your website found on the Internet. Genealogy consulting ranges from teaching genealogy workshops, personal genealogist research, and courthouse research. Both services are provided within North Carolina.
Hugh holds a BS degree from Appalachian State University. He began his career as a public school teacher and briefly served as Director of Research of the North Carolina Republican Party. He later served as a Specialist Assistant to Governor James E. Holsohser. Democrat Governor James B. Hunt invited him to stay and he served nine years in North Carolina state government. Managing the Methods and Procedures Branch of the state Department of Human Resources, he established a paperwork reduction program that initially saved over $500,000.
Moving to the private sector, Hugh completed his first year as the number one computer training consultant with Deltak, Inc. in their Richmond, VA office. Promoted to sales in the Arlington, VA office, he remained with the company for one and a half years and then created PinPoint Corporation a database consultancy. He remained with PinPoint for nine years until he returned to Lenoir to serve as a caregiver to his aging parents.
His Competitive Strategies consultancy complies with SEO Code of Best Practices. Hugh is a member of several genealogical societies and the International Society of Genetic Genealogist (ISOGG). Currently, he serves as Secretary of the Alexander Erwin Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Hugh is active at College Avenue Baptist Church and serves as a Deacon and on several committees. He is a member of the Oak Hill Ruritan Club. Hugh is divorced, has a daughter and two awesome grandsons. He is the proud owner of two brilliant Miniature Schnauzers. Pepper is an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen. Hugh is the compiler of the Brinsley to William V. Barnes Family History. He documents the family history on WikiTree.com and launched a website which is dedicated to Barnes-Oxford family history and the history of the NC Foothills. He will soon add an index to The Lenoir Family Papers to the Website, and the history of early Western NC Baptist Churches in which his family was involved.
